Data Visualization - Methodology

Data visualization is represented here by showing current and forecast weather charts for the New York City area. Current weather data is retrieved from an XML file using the simplexml_load_file PHP function. Forecast data is parsed from a raw text file using the file_get_contents function. Each function calls live weather data provided by NOAA and updates once an hour. Occasionaly during overnight hours some data points may not be available.

After data is collected and parsed it is passed to charts and gauges using the highcharts.js JavaScript library. This robust collection of visualization tools can be customized to fit almost any need. Please note that there are no Flash components involved and this page can be viewed on any mobile device.

A user can mouse over (or tap) on any individual element of the charts to get more detailed information. This allows a large amount of data to be visualized in a small screen area.

About - Martin Chytil

Clear, direct solutions to complex problems are the heart of a successful information technology department. Over the past 16 plus years I have designed, managed, programmed and tested innovative technology for Federal Express Corporation, The Address Management Department of the United States Postal Service, Stanton & Company and Kemper Direct Automobile Insurance Company.

My technical knowledge has grown with each position. Starting with the big data systems of the USPS on to modern responsive web design and programming at Kemper Direct, and Stanton & Company. I enjoy the challenges of emerging technology and strive to keep my skill set current.

This web page was designed and coded using the Foundation JavaScript framework. It is a bootstrap approach that allows for quick prototyping and easy adjustments for mobile devices. The tabs on the portfolio page show six examples of the many websites I have worked on. The data visualization page provides examples of placing raw data into robust charts and graphs.
